Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a tiny town in rural Germany, close to Frankfurt/Main. It influenced my writing in a sense that my past has determined a lot in my present and will continue to do so in my future. Once I started writing my memoir, I realized how important the "where you are from" aspect is because we must be honest about our past experiences and feelings. And that it can impact how we move forward. Also, since my parents (okay, mostly my dad) were super strict and I wasn't allowed to talk much, I became better at the written word than the verbal one.
When did you first start writing?
Thanks to Doris Fertig, my German teacher, I started writing in 4th grade. Once "life" took over as an adult, I completely forgot about writing for me personally. There were no shortages of written communications though in the corporate world, but it never brought much meaning nor satisfaction. I re-ignited that passion when I got fed up being a woman in a man's world, and I set out to improve the gender inequality status quo by writing a memoir about my life with men (the good, the bad, and the ugly).
