Pooch MacKenzie writes (Puppy McPooch Learns How To Knit), tweets (@puppymcpooch), photographs, and makes videos (puppymcpoochshow on Youtube) about fun and interesting things he feels likes sharing, all through the eyes of his handcrafted dog and online alter-ego, Puppy McPooch. The goal is entertainment, education, and laughter. All good things.
What is your writing process?
My writing process is sporadic and haphazard. Ideas randomly come to mind, I may write them down and work on them later. Or I may fill the ideas into a draft book template in MS Word. Sometimes pictures come to mind before words and I draw the illustrations on my iPhone. A single picture can inspire an entire new story line for me, so illustrations are important. These tasks have no schedule. I may get "in the zone" and spend an entire day working on these ideas, then leave it for a few weeks or a month before returning to them. This is mainly because other priorities and responsibilities in life get in the way. With my imagination, if I devoted all of my time to writing, there would be many more books available!
How do you approach cover design?
I like to use vibrant primary colours that can be seen from across the store, or would stand out on a webpage of book covers while readers scroll through. Once I have their attention, the cover art is hand-drawn, in cartoon style, depicting one or more main aspects of the story that will give prospective readers an idea as to what they can expect to find inside.
Puppy McPooch is a curious pup who loves to learn! He recently learned how to knit and got so excited, that he wanted to share his story with you! Perhaps you will be inspired to use sticks and string to create some clothes, crafts, and other fun things. The print version of this picture book has 54 pages.
