Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I spent most of my younger years in the Eastern Cape in a little town called Mthatha. It was away from hum drum city life and was very quiet. I met a lot of colourful people there and fortunately for me they loved story telling because it was sort of a ‘on the moment source of entertainment’ I would usually have an audience and told people my tales as I waited for the school bus. I think my stay there actually made me realise that there was a certain power to storytelling and writing and I realised it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. People would fall madly in love with characters I had just made up on the spot, it was like I was an enchantress that held them in the palm of my hand and I loved it. I started using the people I met there as foundations to my characters, making them more relatable, creating a connection with the listener/reader.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are Anne Rice, Morgan Rice, Sidney Sheldon, Agatha Christie and Marry Higgins Clark. Their writing actually inspires my style and the way I write my characters. Their stories usually have a ‘villain’ with a sympathetic background and plausible cause. It was through reading their story that I discovered that there really is no battle between a good person or a bad person but a battle between the good instincts and bad instincts within us all. A hero can become a villain and vice versa. I try to incorporate that as much as possible in my writing, I love operating in that grey “anti-hero” matter.
