In 2002, Prof. Spira was a 280-pound, 19 year old former high school football player who suffered from multiple ailments such as daily migraine headaches, frequent ear infections, sleep apnea, painful acid reflux, allergies, joint pain, yearly bouts of bronchitis, constant cold and flu-like symptoms, dry itchy skin, chronic constipation, ear infections, and bad body odor. After he lost his mother to a terrible string of chronic illnesses when he was in the 6th grade, he grew up assuming that he was genetically destined to be sick his whole life. While studying jazz trombone performance at the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, he met a jazz drummer named Willie Smart (aka Brother Air) who told him about Arnold Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System.
He had no idea that the mucus-forming foods he consumed played a huge part in his lack of wellness. All he knew was that if he continued on this path of self-destruction, he would surely die. Within 6 months of reading the book, Spira lost 110 pounds and overcame all of his major ailments. He was able to throw away his CPAP unit (an oxygen mask that treats sleep apnea) and the medications he’d taken since childhood. Since his transformation, Spira has become a world-renowned authority on the Mucusless Diet and inspired thousands of people to use Ehret’s Healing System to overcome their illnesses through his writings, music, and one-on-one consultation and coaching sessions.

Education and Professional Musical Activities
Spira is a professional jazz trombonist, educator, and author. He holds a Master of Music in jazz trombone performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Arts in African American and African Studies, and a Ph.D. in musicology with a specialization in ethnomusicology from the Ohio State University.
At the age of 23 he became an adjunct professor of music and African American studies (and the youngest faculty member) at Northern Kentucky University where he taught “Survey of African-American Music” and “Music of World Cultures.” Spira went above and beyond the requirements of an adjunct professor by serving on a committee to design an interdisciplinary course called “The Power of Black Sacred Music,” worked with administrators to develop a “Black Studies Scholarship Initiative” that would provide funding for future full-time instructors in the field of African American studies, and also started the annual Booker T. Washington Holistic Health Fair to promote higher levels of health consciousness within the African American community and among NKU students. He was also a sought after private instructor for trombone performance and jazz improvisation in the Cincinnati area.
As a professional jazz musician, Prof. Spira has performed and recorded with numerous bands and shared the stage with such prominent musicians as Foley McCreary (Miles Davis’ former lead bassist), George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Columbus saxophone legend Gene Walker, Grammy Award nominated trumpeter Ray Vega, Grammy Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch, steel drum virtuoso Othello Molineaux, trombone great Curtis Fuller, pianist Mulgrew Miller, and organist Bobby Floyd. He is also the co-leader of an all-vegetarian and Ehretist jazz group entitled the Breathairean Ensemble, whose members are dedicated to inspiring their listeners to pursue what they call “physiological liberation” through a clean diet.
