I started reading "The Moorish Whore" (for the record, that is what the abbot called her and not what she really was!) and promptly abandoned all the things I was going to do that day. Every time I put it aside to attend to another task I was drawn back to follow the heartbreaking, but ultimately triumphant tale of the life of Zaida, pampered Moorish princess, political pawn, wife of a king, mother of a king to be, who outwitted her loutish "protectors" in the end. Rebekah Scott's debut novel transports you to a place and time not well known. Her vivid descriptive passages bring forth visions of life nearly a thousand years ago. The clash between cultures and religions, the story of duty, faith and love, in the midst of treachery and ignorance, the amazing attention to detail, all come together to make a fascinating story that begs to be made into a movie. I hope there are many more works by Rebekah Scott. Her ability to draw a lively scene without being overly wordy is a gift. When she describes events in the life of her characters you are there!
