In a Time of Darkness - Review By Jason Leyanna In a Time of Darkness is the first in a series of medieval novels written by Greg Knoll. The entry point into this series tells the story of Grahamas and Elryia and their fight to liberate their world from the tyrant-King Idimus. The relationships and plot twists keep this story fresh and engrossing with each character playing an integral part in developing this story to its conclusion. This is an epic tale. Grahamas is at the forefront of returning the land to one of peace and prosperity but cannot do this single-handedly. Elryia is also a key component to restoring order to this land and is more powerful than anyone had fathomed. The territory is currently under the thumb of a paranoid and heartless king, Idimus. Together with a band of companions of diverse origins, Grahamas and company are on a mission. The companions include Samsum, Jeralyle (a Mage), Lanyan (Elf), Merial(Human), Carsis (Human), Gort (Dwarf), and Gnert( Gnome). They have many treacherous threats ahead of them. They must also recruit an army to fight off the onslaught of enemies that the King sends after them. The relationships between the characters evolve through the story and some even to the extreme. There are also romantic relationships between certain characters that will keep the reader interested. The way this plays out is interesting and shows us more about each one of the characters and their true intentions. This is just one of the many character developments during the course of the 500+ pages of In a Time of Darkness. The ensuing war and dynamic characters make the story intriguing. Then the twists in the plot keep you from putting down the book because at the end of every chapter there is something to be curious about. Despite the good intentions and aid our heroes obtain, The King, Idimus, and his minions will not be taken down easily. King's forces are many and include Gerin, the King's general, who is training an army of men and going up against Grahama. Kalinies is the King's devious and resourceful wizard and has powerful spells and magic. There are also sub-human monstrosities that were created to aid the king. Thankfully, our protagonists also come across some new and long-lost allies to help them defeat the many skillful enemies that turn up. In a Time of Darkness has a medieval theme running through it and had me continually turning the pages. I could hardly put the book down except when absolutely necessary. There is much action and plot to keep the reader engaged, questioning what will happen next and if the good-hearted will be able to succeed in their mission In a Time of Darkness is a story of companionship, loyalty, betrayal, fear and hope. Its keeps the reader immersed in action and adventure. In a Time of Darkness has it all and is a timeless masterpiece on par with The Lord of the Rings. It is a wonderfully powerful and engaging story that had me interested from the first page to the last. Now I impatiently await the sequel. 9.5/10
