Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Jackson, Mississippi to immigrant parents, the son of a Czechoslovakian mother and a Chechen father. Because of this unique family heritage, I learned at a young age how to recognize universal themes that consistently emerge in all cultural tales and myths, regardless of the country of origin. I was lucky enough to make a career of this passion, and traveled the world as a visiting professor for two decades. In 2010, I took early retirement to pursue the question of what my favorite legend (Vlasta and the Founding of Prague) would look like if it was set in modern day America.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Book 2 continues with many characters from Book 1, while introducing some important White Rock players. In the first book, White Rock was an idea believed by a few characters. In the second book, it becomes a subplot in its own right, though several characters struggle with how much they believe.

Jessica McConsas emerges as a major player in Extant. She was one of those characters that demanded more of a voice after I was done with Book 1, and she got it! Also, the drama between Henri and Evan, their complicated and complex sibling relationship that is really at the heart of the entire series, deepens further.
