Rick Karlsruher

I have led an usual life. Shortly after graduating from college I decided to be a writer. After several years of trying I thought I was on my way only to find it would lead to a Homeric odyssey.

The impact of those two years took me away from writing for more than twenty years. After much cajoling, I succumbed to literally hundreds of requests to write my story that became A Story Almost Told.

Doing so has led me back to this passion.

Now comes Standoff, How the Cold War Really Ended. If you thought you knew, you were wrong. A simple detective story morphs into a spectacular satire on power and arrogance.

Paying homage to Jonathan Swift, Dr, Strangelove, Rowan & Martin and Jon Stewart, Standoff will inform you and create laughter.

I am a graduate of Wake Forest University.

Smashwords Interview

What was the first story you ever wrote?
Standoff was really the first story I wrote. I had written lyrics to a few songs, news and sports copy, ads and other things, but nothing full form.

I had tried a little comedy and was encouraged by legends like Dick Martin (Laugh-In) and Matty Simmons (Founder of National Lampoon, Producer of Animal House, Vacation and more).
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are great! They encourage me and I truly enjoy making them smile. Sometimes, it's at me rather than with me. But that's OK.

What if everything you thought you knew about how the Cold War ended was wrong? Forget about Reagan, Gorbachev and the Pope. When the superpowers decided they couldn't blow each other off the face of the Earth, other plans had to be created. Think of Dr. Strangelove meets Barney Fife meets Angie Tribeca while wagging the dog. Standoff is the participants' story...and they are sticking to it!

Everyone's life is a story. Mine became more of one than I ever imagined possible. All I wanted to do was get my movie made. How did I know this dream would take me across three continents? How could I know I'd become part of an IRS sting? I never expected a baby-faced conman would destroy my life nor did I expect to see aparthied in South Africa or be arrested in New Orleans and much more.
