Gary Weston

Hello again.

I've added Drifta's Quest 2 on this site. Unlikely to be a Drifta's Quest 3 but never say never. I am already working on a new book to fit in between other creative projects. As a mere lad of 68 I have a good few years to tell my stories so I hope people will keep enjoying them.

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Black Country of the industrial midlands of England. I now live in a rural town in New Zealand, which is one heck of a contrast. Apart from general experience, the Black Country had little influence on my writing, but in Starlight Army, my memories of the place were used to describe the setting.
When did you first start writing?
I started seriously about eight years ago. I entered a couple of short stories in a local newspaper competition. One heck of a transition to full length efforts, requiring a different mind set. Now, shorts are something I write whilst waiting for inspiration. I'm still waiting.....

Smashwords book reviews by Gary Weston

  • Not at all Rhinocerus on Jan. 07, 2012

Insanely fun. Dare I say 'Spike would like?' I suspect reading a novel by this writer would leave me mentally scarred, but i may recover from this...eventually!
  • Cab Driver on Jan. 20, 2012

Mildly amusing, even with the huge plot hole
  • Mimosa (Cocktail Series #1) on Feb. 20, 2012

Well written with just a couple of tiny fluffs, hence 4 stars. Good dialogue and nice interaction.
  • A Little Bit Elephant on Feb. 26, 2012

For lovers of the strange I think, this could drive us all to drink, For Barnaby has Wilde ideas, worthy of applause by his peers, for your collection is a must, to be enjoyed, not covered in dust!
  • Tunnel Vision on Feb. 27, 2012

Only Barnaby could write about a whale that's flying, or wonky dining tables with things so very trying, Or dancers having strange affairs, though I'm sure about that, nobody cares, the main thing is it made me smile, and I'll read the rest, in a while.
  • Tales of the Absurdid on March 04, 2012

Addictive. If there's a typo,it's escaped me so far. Slightly odd formatting, which only adds to its quirky (an overused term, but it sits well here)style. I'm not reminded of anyone, which is a good thing, because Gord has a refreshing uniqueness that will amuse us for years to come. If this is Gord's first outing, (I sincerely doubt!)then I look forward to reading much more by him.
  • Red World on March 12, 2012

Melissa takes us into her own strange world with strong characters, great dialog and had me become a fly on the wall, watching the action unfurl. By use of her words, we can almost smell the people. The writing is excellent, with her own unique style. I look forward to more by this clever writer. (Jason?')
  • Wicked Things: Five Tales of Horror on March 12, 2012

An excellent collection of horror stories. Also enjoyed her book red world.
  • In The Shadow of Peter on March 14, 2012

Melissa can bring the dark side to any fable. She has a captivating and contagious style, and I have no doubt she will become a major player with an army of followers, me included. I look forward to watching her journey to becoming established and acknowledged as a talented writer.
  • Stories From The Pumpkin Woods on April 13, 2012

Once in awhile, a significant writer comes along. Melissa is that writer. Although a good read for any age, any young aspiring writer, or any writer of YA stories, must read this. Not only is it an engaging story, but the purity of the writing shines out in every line. If you want to know how it's done, this is the story to show you the way. It is that good. It is also the start of a series that will captivate and entertain for a very long time and I can't wait for the next installment. If there were six stars, i would give it six.
  • LMAO The First on April 21, 2012

I needed de-stressing and this hit the spot. I'm two hundred and forty three years old and haven't heard of 99 percent of these jokes. As this is the first, I look forward to the second. Good Job.
  • Existence on May 12, 2012

You, Ms Stewart, are a terrible, terrible person. There I was, falling into your beautifully written world, and you burst my bubble....So neatly done, but so desperately crying out to be a biggy. Loved it anyway. (five stars if you make a book of this, okay?) I will even pay good money for it.
  • Literary Dynamite on May 24, 2012

Writers! Just read this. Brilliant. 'nuff said.
  • Yitzi on June 03, 2012

A pure delight. Perhaps i am biased because I have a four legged princess, but i connected with this. A few typos away from a five star review. I don't give out accolades freely, but i saw the story in my mind and if a writer can do that, he can write. Zvi has a vivid imagination and a purity of style that should be enjoyed by many. I look forward to reading more by this writer.
  • The Ad Agency on June 03, 2012

Did I say delightful for his last book? Such visualization. Zvi draws us into his world, containing a richness and flavor that the first beverage of the morning hits us with. With a tweak here and there and a full length effort, Zvi will be a major player. I'll enjoy watching him become the prominent player in his field.
  • Zombie Psychology on June 17, 2012

Zombies, yuck! I couldn't eat a whole one. Enjoyed this, though.
  • A Ghost's Guide to Haunting Humans on June 17, 2012

Right. Chocolate flavored ghosts. Plain or milk?

I got a Dandy, only her name is Minnie. Would she help me? Yep, if she wanted her dinner!!! Nice story.
  • Barnaby's Shorts (Volume One) on July 22, 2012

I enjoyed the diversity of these amusing stories. Wilde is always a good read.
  • Hitler's Youth - An Analysis of Mein Kampf on July 28, 2012

I always wanted to read Mien Kampf. Not because I subscribe to any of the concepts, quite the opposite. I am opposed to any national feelings of superiority. However, isn't it important to understand why we feel certain things are abhorrent? Through study comes understanding and enlightenment. I am not going to believe every opinion stated in this book, but applaud the attempt to explain the rational of Hitler's thinking. Hitler was born in 1889, and yet here we are in 2012 and there are people who still see him as a figurehead. Why? What is so compelling about the man and his philosophy? Although I hate separatism and racism of any kind, I think any dissection of this ideology helps us with a fundamental insight into the human condition. Lets hate Mien Kampf, but understand why we hate it. I hope there is more to follow.
  • All Except One on Aug. 07, 2012

A very enjoyable story with an atmosphere so thick you can stir it with a spoon
  • For God and Country on Aug. 26, 2012

So refreshing to read such a well written and compelling story, intricately woven and told with the eye of a first rate story teller. Engaging from start to finish, this is a book that goes the distance. I love books that "stay with me" and this one will. Enjoy.
  • Vet Bites Dog on Sep. 02, 2012

Written with the care and precision that a man in this profession would be expected to have. An entertaining glimpse into the world of a veterinarian working for an animal charity.
  • Barnaby's Shorts (Volume Three) on Oct. 28, 2012

This is Barnaby Wilde in top form. His humour and original style captures the essence of telling it short and telling it well. Very moreish, like having a big packet of chocolate biscuits, hard to stop once you've started.
  • Outgrowth of the Brain on Sep. 19, 2013

An ok read. A little abrupt at the end. Could have expanded out into something more interesting, I thought, but nicely written.
  • An Artist's Freedom on Oct. 26, 2013

When a writer with an in-depth understanding of his chosen genre writes as well as John Muir does, a story that haunts long after the last line has been read is inevitable. Muir has crafted a well written, disturbing piece in this tale, and this I'm certain is just a taste of more to come. A writer to watch.
  • Humans and Their Creations on Nov. 08, 2013

New to smash, not new to writing. Perfect technical writing, and Exceptional imagery in this collection of shorts. A natural for sci fi / horror. I would like to read more full length work, to see how dialogue is handled, but have no doubt it would be equally well crafted. Assuming Alyssa Hubbard is teasing us and perhaps testing the water at smash (?) I expect to see a small (perhaps large) army of fans building up here. Allow me to be your first.
  • Time Is of the Essence on Nov. 16, 2013

Anyone combining sci fi with humor gets my vote. Anyone doing so this good, also gets five stars. I look forward to reading more.
  • Ray Was Right on Nov. 16, 2013

A touch surreal, and a fun read. Perhaps a jostling of ideas worthy of a novella? But hey, it is space opera and there's nothing wrong with that!
  • The Star Travelers Episode 1 - Ships and Swords on Dec. 14, 2013

I love discovering writers I just know have a huge potential. I find Mary has a unique and quirky style and will gather many fans of this genre. Can't wait to read the next episode. And what a cool cover!!!.
  • One Last Delivery on Dec. 14, 2013

Hi. I enjoyed this, but then I'm weird. Atmospheric and flowing well, the story pulls you in. A couple of typos need addressing, like think steak instead of thick steak. And was it meant to be Mars or marks on the fridge? Could have been chocolate, I guess??? A couple of layout issues, but nothing that detracted from the overall enjoyment of the story. I'm betting that by the time the next person reads this book, the tiny issues mentioned above will have been addressed and they'll be wondering what I was on about. Another little tidy up and here is a five star story. For prospective readers of this creepy horror, I recommend you indulging in this "Tasty" offering. Keep going, Mr Bystry. The world deserves to be checking under their beds before they go to sleep and you will have them doing that! Good Job. (review of free book)
  • Heaven Inc. on Dec. 15, 2013

For those in the know, I write a little bit. This is me giving this one a standing ovation. So. What do I like about it? It is fresh, unique, very well written, entertaining, amusing, easy to read. I could go on. I'm sure there is much more to come from this talented writer and I'll be following Mary with interest as she blossoms and gathers many fans. Kudos, Mary.
  • Hickory Dickory Dock on Dec. 16, 2013

I'm trawling and reviewing at the moment. Writers beware!!! Mr Strange. If Poe were alive, (and who says he isn't?') He would be writing this way. A delight to read for the purity of the writing. The ending isn't bad, but needs a rethink. A few less 'Paul's' and a little more grit. So damn close. Just more GRIT. I wanna love this, because you suckered me right in. Make me love it even more. I'll check this out again in a couple of weeks when I'm sober and review it again. Make me shiver at the end just that tad more, you get a five. (review of free book)

Finally, I understand. The two most painful experiences they say, are childbirth and gallstones. I'm a man, so can only experience one. It is a debilitating, rolling around on the floor in agony kind of pain. Kudos, E I B. Thanks for the memories...Screw you, I'll give you four stars anyway...

Ok. Nice, in a sick way. Delicious in its execution. Don't we like delicious executions?? Crap cover, (I've a thing about covers, lately) But I'll go with delicious...

Ah! There's creepy, then there is this. Love the cover, (and I've not said that much lately) But the writing is delicious and appreciated. I loved the fact the writer wrote from experience. He's been there, done that and it showed. Google will only tell you so much. Yes. An enjoyable romp, Angus, and I've made your morning when you read this five star review. Kudos. The sun is shining and all is ok with your world. Have a nice day.

A nice flash satire and food for thought

Nice idea, but needs serious head hitting. And I should know as the self proclaimed king of the "pytos". Then / Than. Commas. Still worth a four star, but...!!! No excuse in a story of a thousand words. Hmm. I'm just saying.... And while I'm banging on, I like the cover, just up the font on the text. Nice story. Do it justice.

I quite liked this. Atmospheric. I could "hear' the facilities heavy steel doors clanging. Nicely told. Perhaps just me, but I thought the use of the italics slightly overdone. But a good premise and concept. Thought provoking and entertaining. Good job.

As a bloke alone, I have to cook or starve. Fortunately, I survive the experience. Ria has a sparkling wit which shines out of her book and it is a pleasure to read. It is written in a simple way, as is her philosophy with cooking. I did learn a few things from her tips, and I look forward to making her mug chocolate cake. If I become addicted to those, I suppose I can always buy larger size jeans (again). I recommend this to newbies in the kitchen, living on a tight budget. A good way to gain confidence in the kitchen and grow from there. Good Job, Ria.

Delightful imagery, with a "story teller" feel. Always a pleasure to read stories by an accomplished wordsmith.
