Smashwords Interview

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Ever since I was a boy, reading comic books, and "Moby Dick," and junk paperbacks from the drugstore and most everything in our little town's little library, I had an urge to tell stories. I wound up doing that as a career, writing articles and essays for magazines, from "Reader's Digest" to "National Geographic." It paid the bills, but it didn't seem enough--I wanted to write fiction, stories untethered from fact, but tied to "truth," whatever that might be. Now I am writing fiction. I hope my stories are tied to some underlying truth. I know for sure that writing them is a joy.
What do your fans mean to you?
I do have readers, and maybe some of them, at least, are fans--when people read the stories I've written, it completes a kind of electrical circuit, and the telling is complete. That's what readers mean to me.
