Roy Hayward

Biography

Roy Hayward loves to read. He spent much of his years growing up holed up in well lit corners of libraries reading all of the fiction that he could find. There were many times that one librarian or another would recommend a book, and Roy would have already read it. As a result he decided that he would be a writer at a young age.

Roy graduated from high school in Fairfield, Iowa. He served two years as a missionary in Seoul Korea. He attended college at Rick College in Rexburg, Idaho, and then the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Started out studying Chemistry, but switched majors to Political Science.

After college, he got a job and discovered that he was more interested in the computers he used than the job he used them to do. A year after college he was working doing tech support for a printer company. He bounced from job to job working his way up in skills and position. He is now a programmer managing a team of Web Developers.

In Rexburg, he met his wife Beth. After stealing her away from his roommate, they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple and began their life-long adventure. They had seven children of their own and then became foster parents. As of this writing they have adopted four children from foster care and are still fostering children.

Through all of these adventures, Roy has continued to read, and to write. And to share his love of good books with others; his friends, his family, and random people on the internet.

Smashwords Interview

What's the story behind your latest book?
So, I've been reading fiction for a long long time. Most of that has been Science Fiction. When I was in High School I read some short stories about trees and plant aliens. I hadn't thought about them much when in 2015 I was listening to a writing podcast and the host started making jokes about genre mashups. They were talking about elves in space.

This was a germ of an idea that started this story. Somehow I knew that elves in space would need trees in space. And I was already working on a novel that involved colonization. I wrote a chapter with Terrance my main character interacting with trees on a colony world. After that, the story started to grow.

My original novel became the backstory for this one. And I'm not sad about that. I'm planning on using it as the backstory for a few others as well. It looks like a better backstory than a novel now.
Who are your favorite authors?
Asimov and Heinlein were my first two favorite authors. Later I have added Gordon R Dickson, David Brin, and Orson Scott Card.

When I was younger, I read all of the books the local libraries carried of these writers. Since then I've read more. So I've pretty much read everything Asimov and Heinlein have written. I can't quite say the same thing about the others. Someday.
