Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
My first extended writing experience was creating a thesis for my Bachelors degree. Little did I know that this would lead to additional dissertations, journal, newspaper and magazine articles and eventually to fiction and nonfiction book publications.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Upon completing my first novel, "Susquehanna Scandal," two publishers, one in the U.S. and one in the U.K., indicated that a contract would be forthcoming. After waiting a reasonable amount of time, I queried them only to be informed both were selling out; one to a long-time employee who no longer wanted to publish fiction, and one to an e-publisher who wanted me to reduce the story to a novella. Meanwhile, I had researched self-publishing, wasn't excited by what I had found, before a colleague in my writer's group suggested I contact her husband who had set himself up as a small publisher. Within no time my book was on the market and years later is still my best seller. In spite of continuing to receiving contractual offers from traditional publishers, I've chosen to remain an indie-author and self-publisher.
