Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a great little town known as the Sunshine Capital of New Zealand. Nelson was named after Lord Nelson of the battle of Trafalgar fame and nestles on the coast of Golden Bay at the northern tip of the South Island.
Being right on the edge of the Bay, the whole population is within a mile or two of the ocean, so interest in the sea and all things nautical is profound.
As a boy we used to go down to the main wharf and watch the weekly arrival of the ferry with food and general supplies for the town.
Around the time I was nine or ten, my Dad bought a small clinker built dinghy powered with a small put put engine. We named her 'Sea Hawk' and proceeded to have many adventures in her, 'Swallows and Amazons' style from that day forward. Much fishing was done from her and we had many a fine catch hauled in.
Later on I graduated to fishing trawlers and small sailing dinghies, so my interest in boats, fishing and sailing began from an early age.
An average student only at school in my early years seemed to be my lot, but I excelled in English, always topping or coming second in class for imaginative essays. This seems to have stuck with me over the years and I guess was the spark to get me started writing.
When did you first start writing?
In earlier life with the rush of growing up, marriage, family life and business I, like most folks just couldn't find the time to sit down and write.
So, it was only after my sailing voyage half way round the world in my own sailboat that I finally made the commitment to write of my adventures. Once started I found it a liberating and most satisfying experience.
