Smashwords Interview

What's the story behind your latest book?
I've always written fantasy stories. My twin and I created our own world and everything, we have such a good story with characters we love, but we didn't think now was the time to bring them out.
So I wrote The Hunter's Tale, which does have the main character from our story involved. But I wanted to start out with a simple story for my first book.
It didn't end up simple. I ended up deeply probing into the characters emotions, and why they felt that way. It went from a simple story to something that has the potential for an entire series with characters I found engaging to write, and they became living beings on their own.
I wanted my story to be about family. It became so much more than that. Family isn't just your mother and father, brothers and sisters. Family is your friends, your community, your lover, your home, your country. Family is everything that you hold dear in your heart, person, place or thing.
My story is about family.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've loved writing my whole life. I have floppy disks full of the stories I wrote back on our old Mac, I have books I wrote and bound in elementary school.
My twin is a librarian and has learned that the publishing industry is changing faster than anyone can really grasp, so we decided to publish online rather than spending our time and energy fishing for a publisher.
I decided to write because I quit my job as a shoe store manager. My twin and I were fortunate enough to have grandparents that were generous in their wills as thrifty as they were in life. We have the financial means to live together on one income for a while yet. My job was the lesser paying, more stressful job so it was me who got to quit.

I really enjoyed this book. It grabbed me right away with the story of small town Canadians that were relate-able and believable characters and stories behind the characters. This story has a vast cast of characters and a large, overarching story that is touched on in this book and I'm looking forward to it all being wrapped up in the next one. It's really well written and held my attention enough that I went long over my half hour lunch breaks and got in trouble a few times. Worth it.
