Sarah L King

Sarah L King lives in West Lothian, Scotland, with her husband and young children. Born in Nottingham and raised in Lancashire, her books include the historical fiction novels, The Gisburn Witch (2015) and A Woman Named Sellers (2016), both set during the Lancashire witch trials in the seventeenth century. Ethersay is her first contemporary novel, and was inspired by the seismic shift in the Scottish political landscape which occurred in 2014, and its impact upon ordinary lives.

Aside from history and politics, Sarah loves long country walks, romantic ruins, Thai food and spending time with her family.

Smashwords Interview

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Being able to lose yourself in a different time or place, alongside interesting and complex people! I love getting inside the head of my characters. For me, writing is both a creative outlet and a form of escapism.
How do you get inspired to write?
I write historical fiction so quite simply, the history inspires me! My academic background is in history and I have always found myself looking beyond facts and dates and the formal presentation of history, trying to peer at the people and their lives, asking how they felt, how they reacted, how they became embroiled in and/or navigated the events we now read about in the history books or learn about in museums. I like to look at the sources we use to understand history, which are so often filled with bias and written by victors, and disseminate them, trying to grab at the human stories, the feuds, the character flaws, the forbidden desires which sit behind. For me, it doesn't get much more inspiring than that!
