Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
I never set out to be a writer. But I suppose that puts me in good company because a lot of people find themselves simultaneously where they never planned but exactly where they're meant to be. God puts us where He wants us, where He knows we need to be. But that doesn't always match up with where we envision ourselves. This has certainly be true for me.

I absolutely loved working with children as a teacher. And after the birth of our biological son and the later adoption of our youngest son, I always assumed I'd return return to the classroom after our little ones were school-aged themselves. But God had other plans. Due to the medical frailty of our adopted son, Mark, and his many special needs, I was just never able to return to the career I loved so much.

This forced me to reinvent myself. I had to create a new career. In letting go of what I wanted, I was able to discover new skills that I didn't know I had and accepted a new calling.

For the past several years, I've worked as a contributing writer and curriculum designer for OneHope, a global nonprofit ministry devoted to sharing the life-changing message of the Gospel with youth and children worldwide.

After focusing on writing for young people, it became clear that I had as much to share with adults as I did with children. So I began writing articles and sharing my ideas in magazines such as Exceptional Parents, Adoptive Families, Hybrid Mom, Mothering and Focus on the Family’s Thriving Family.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I break the rules. I don't write what I know. I write what I desperately need to learn.

My latest book, How to Give Up, shares the concrete advice I was grappling to find myself. As a struggling and stressed out mom to a boy with a mountain of special needs, I didn't want to be placated with regurgitated Bible verses I'd heard over and over again. I needed to know how to apply them. I needed hope. I needed genuine help that was grounded in God's Word.

When I couldn't find what I needed, I decided to write it myself so that maybe others could benefit as well. In short, I discovered that not only was it okay to give up. I had to in order to survive. And my book details specific, concrete ways on exactly how to do just that.
