Biography
Hi! We’re Simon Owen Rogers and Kristin Dashiell, a Brit and an American living in Bangkok and traveling at every opportunity.
Kristin is an ESL teacher, a writer, a poet, a bookworm, and, honestly, a bit of a nerd.
Simon is a primary school teacher who loves a good party anywhere in the world.
We met in July 2015 in Guangzhou, China. While Kristin was just beginning a year-long teaching contract, Simon’s was coming to an end in only a couple months. Still, we quickly realized that we had a lot of fun together and shared an equal obsession with seeing the world – especially the less frequented corners that are not often explored by other travelers. We want to go everywhere we possibly can!
Despite us both thinking getting together was a bad idea (not only was Simon leaving very soon, we were also coworkers at a very small school), we finally acknowledged the spark between us at a flat party one night in Guangzhou. We threw all our cards out on the table in their kitchen and had that romantic first kiss. 😉
As the night went on, we found ourselves over analyzing, over drinking, over talking, over drinking some more, explaining why we would never work, explaining why we should definitely work, sharing way too many details about our lives and fears and wants, and then finally, somehow, chasing each other around the Canton Tower before lying down to make out in the middle of a road. (Luckily, traffic is quite rare in this part of Guangzhou at 3AM).
Things went a bit smoother after that.
When Simon left China to live in a van, driving around Australia for a few months, we made a promise that this wouldn’t be a final goodbye. We planned to pick random spots around the world to reunite every so often – Turkmenistan, Mongolia, Albania – anywhere would do!
But it wasn’t long before we knew we wanted more than just brief reunions in our future. Eventually a plan came together: when Kristin’s teaching contract ended in China, and Simon had finished his time in Australia, we’d both find jobs in the same city again. Now we are loving our life together in Bangkok and we’re excited to continue our adventures as we seek out the unusual around the world.
