Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Shirley, New York -- a small, lazy beach-town on Long Island that has had a profound affect on my writing. It's enigma, a welfare/child-molester dumping ground, along with hard-working middle-class citizens, inspired my upbringing -- and in turn my writing. I feel the environment created by its people and its nature has molded with my aura--with my whole being. Even though I am no longer living in Shirley, I can still feel the beat of her waves with each beat of my heart. Shirley will always be a part of me, and I a part of her.
When did you first start writing?
I've always been writing. Always been filling up books and napkins and pads...filling up anything I could get my hands on. Several stacks of pages stowed away, poking out of notebooks, under my bed growing up. Earliest memories include writing a pop-up book, illustrating and creating the pop-ups, while I was in Kindergarten. I remember getting called down to the principal and sharing my project with the man, reading him my creation. It was a fond experience, and had propelled me to create more projects through the written word...projects that I continued to produce in elementary school. I started experimenting with poetry in first and second grade. And then a short stint exploring non-fiction in third grade, that caught a lot of gripe from my teacher who did not approve of my stream-of-consciousness approach. And then in fifth grade, a collaborative novella about a war between pens and pencils with a friend. Then I dove back into poetry, and then fiction and so on and so forth... I've been practicing the craft for a long while, now.
