I will admit to being unnaturally biased towards this book. The author is a good friend of mine, and asked me to read and review their book for them. So, I did. And I loved it. The book itself is short. Around 60 pages and only available through several online sources as an ebook, but that didn’t stop me from reading it of course. When the author puts it t print, I will definitely purchase a copy myself. Gates does a wonderful job at putting so much of a story into such a short book, and had me theorizing and wondering and exclaiming at each new thing presented and explained. I don’t get that with books often! Another thing that’s great about this book is the main character, Douglas. A trans* individual, thrown into something utterly awful and otherworldly. Poor thing never saw it coming. Gates mixes traditional Lovecraftian horror with something akin to the meticulously planned affairs of the fae courts, and I definitely want to know more about the creatures in their story and what happens to Douglas and everyone he knew. Rating: Highschool level, at the least. It’s very graphic and has a few very triggering things in it that some people may not be comfortable with. (suicide, spiders, trypophobia, scropophobia, gore, tentacles, this book is not for the squeamish I promise you) Highly recommended though, if you can spare $3, I suggest buying it and giving it a good read!
