Stephanie Parker McKean

Because my parents ran a roadside zoo, I’ve survived being mauled by an African lion; bitten by a poisonous snake and attacked by an insane miniature chimp. Fleeing childhood sexual abuse and two medically unsupervised backwoods abortions by the perpetrator, I lived under a bridge, painting signs in exchange for meals, and washing myself and my clothes in the river – even on the coldest days of winter.
What doesn’t make you bitter makes you better. You really can’t make lemonade without lemons.
And thank God, I’ve made the transition from atheist to Christian. My two favorite Bible verses are: in everything give thanks, and all things work together to good to them that love the LORD.
The worst day in my life was the day I lost my job; my mother died and I couldn’t make plans to attend her funeral because my husband was sent home from the hospital to die; our sheepdog died, and my truck caught on fire in downtown San Antonio, Texas. Things could only get better!
Thanks to Jesus, they have! I’m now married to Alan McKean, an author in his own right with the best-selling The Scent of Time and the soon-to-be-released The Scent of Home to his credit. We live in lovely Scotland with our rough collie, Angel Joy. My mystery-romance-suspense, Bridge to Nowhere, has been published by Sunpenny Publishing, the first of a series featuring forty-something Texan Miz Mike, whose attempts to mind her own business are foiled by her motto: “never let an adventure pass by unmolested.”

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
When I was about nine, my father came home with a pony in the back of the station wagon. He explained that he had sold his first book and used the advance to buy a pony. Right then and there, I was hooked on writing. If it could make enough money to buy ponies - it was the right job for me! What really sealed the deal was when I asked him if his book was true. He replied that it was "fiction," a story he made up - a lie. That's when I knew I had found my dream job. Since kindergarten, I had been in trouble for telling "tall tales" at school and had been warned by teachers and my parents to tell the truth, not lies. But here was my father introducing me to a way to tell the truth between the lines and get paid for it. Wow!
What's the story behind your latest book?
"Love's Beating Heart" is a parallel adventure-romance with a strong pro-life, marriage, adoption, and homeschool message woven into the plot and action. I was sexually abused as a child. I got pregnant at 13, and again at 14. Both times, the rapist hid his crime by preforming backwoods abortions on me. Both times, I nearly bled to death. The abortions were forced on me. I was helpless to stop them and was given no choice. When I became a Christian, I realized that abortion was murder. It was too late for me and my babies - but perhaps I could share a pro-life story in a Huck Finn-type action story that would help teens and up think about abortion versus adoption. So best friends embark on a raging flooded river to "save Baby" while their sister, Cat, engineers adventures of her own and winds up facing danger and despair - before finally finding love.
