Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Indianapolis plays an important role in much of my writing. It is the primary setting of Last Days and Times and is actually an important "character" in Conqueror's Realm and my latest, Voice of the City. I've spent much of my life in this mid-sized city, and I prefer to write about places I've actually been rather than places I looked up on Google Earth. Not that I haven't traveled. Washington, DC, Chicago, London and the genteel, rolling environs of central Germany also feature heavily in my work.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first complete story I ever read was Space Cat, by Ruthven Todd. My mom took me to the public library to get my first card, and that was the story they let me check out, provisionally until my card came in the mail. I was five years old. This book, a bit above my reading level, was to me a magnum opus of literature. I have read that book at least four times, even as an adult reading it to my young boys. The only book I've read more would be Anna Karenina. Space Cat demonstrated to me the heights the imagination could reach. I wouldn't be surprised if elements of Space Cat could be found deep in the DNA of my space fantasy Shining Star, certainly in Galactic Geographic.

  • Kiss Chronicles on March 29, 2013

This is really good stuff. Often poignant, often cheeky, always witty and always engaging, Virginia Sanders weaves a story that is a microcosm of Internet-age, post-millennial dating. Everybody's been there, and sometimes we didn't want to be there. Sometimes, we didn't want to leave. One thing's for sure, from chapter 1 of Kiss Chronicles, you'll find yourself cheering for the Everygirl, and hoping the story keeps on keeping on, and feeling a guilty pleasure in it.
  • Catamaran Crossing: A Sailing Adventure from La Coruña to Antigua on June 13, 2020

This is a fascinating true-life story of a small boat crossing the Atlantic Ocean. I'll tell you up front, there are no murderous whales, man-eating sharks, monsters of the deep, or gigantic, terror-infusing waves. It isn't that kind of story. It's a story of the day-to-day chores and the small and not-so-small joys of depending on yourself, your friends, and becoming one with the sea. Not knowing a thing about sailing, I still found myself immersed in the details behind this adventure. What it must have been like without satellite radio, sat phones, cell phones, or anything amounting to a modern-day computer, taking on nature in a tiny speck of a 40-ft boat over thousands of miles of empty ocean. I recommend this quick read to anyone who wishes to escape the histrionic melodrama of their latest fiction read. Good stuff!
