Steve Vollmer

I write fiction well, play mediocre chess, garden creatively, and practice ever evolving yoga. I live with my girlfriend on the side of a small mountain, large hill combo with lots of wild flora and fauna, both life forms far more interesting than the top of the food chain. I'm terrible writing about myself. I guess that's non-fiction. I often wonder how I'd do on Jeopardy.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have goals in life to reach my maximum potential. To reach self-actualization.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work at my day job. I practice yoga. I garden. I spend time with my girlfriend. I play chess. I enjoy the beauty of my surroundings. I do things to calm my mind and caress my soul.

  • Not a Word About Love - Short Read on June 28, 2015

A compelling read which taps into much of the ennui and hidden desires incumbent on long relationships. Well-written. Leaves the reader wondering about Maya's future.
  • The Driving Lesson on July 02, 2015

I was a little thrown by the POV switch from Elliott to Cross, one seems personal the other more distant. Otherwise a good read with just enough setup to justify the ending.
  • Finder Kept: A Tale of Unintended Fate on July 04, 2015

A compelling read with fine point of view shifts. I would suggest more spare writing. Consider dropping a few 'that's' for example. The sentences will read far more succinct. Another example, 'with the cash.' JMO but that is not necessary and the reader can figure it out. Real good characterizations and I particularly like the distancing names.
  • The Black Eagle on Oct. 04, 2015

Compelling characters highlight this moving short story about a man whose warlike past is resurrected by a young soldier who is perhaps a mirror of who the narrator once was. Completely believable setting, I felt as if I was there. The characters themselves do a fine job of telling the story. Could use some editing and tightening. Overall a fine piece which will stay with the reader.
