I recommend Matters Familiar to readers that crave tales with characters and settings that reflect the complexities of life told with an understanding for the human condition. Each short story has independent voice, narrative rhythm, motive and conflict, and I thoroughly enjoyed them all.
I, like most readers of short stories, expect the short format to give me an untraditional ending, and in this regard Matters Familiar will not disappoint you; they are crafted not to mollify the reader nor did I find them jarringly abrupt. Matters Familiar is a collection of tales told with refreshing insight and originality.
