Predictable, overly simplistic yarn. Think of a Zane Grey western mated with a Dr. Who episode. I really wanted to like Thomas Stone's work because I eat up science fiction books like candy. But I won't bother with another. My idea of really good science fiction are books like the Broadcast space opera written by Randolph Lalonde.
I have read every Lalonde book and I loved them all. Lalonde is the best science fiction writer of our time, IMHO. But I must have been off my feed the day I read Expendable Few. I just couldn't get into it. I know from following the blogs that Lalonde worked really hard on this book, maybe too hard. He mentioned once that he pounded out other books in much less time than he took to write this one. Maybe that's the better formula for him. I will reread this book again later this year because I feel I owe it to Lalonde, an author I truly admire.
