He was born on the North West coast of the US in the late 40's. Addicted to horror movies, he spent hours absorbing everything that induces a sense of terror and fright in people. He was afraid of the dark as a child and this fear of the dark served to heighten his insight into those things that frighten people.
As a voracious reader, he delighted in finding unique ways of describing the most mundane things. "Words must have a taste or they are useless" is a phrase friends frequently heard him mutter as he read anything from advertisements to Stephen King. As a young man he traveled extensively and studied how and why people were repelled and frightened
