I remember a story I wrote in junior high that received a lot of praise from my teacher and parents. It was passed around like crazy and I even read it aloud in front of my peers. I found it a few years ago and it was really bad, even for a 13 year-old. It was full of spelling and grammar errors. Worse than that, the writing was so weak I don't understand what the fuss was about. I'm glad nobody discouraged me, but it was false praise.
What is your writing process?
Since I'm only interested in writing non-fiction, it's pretty simple. I just take a chunk of knowledge and throw away the chaff. Easier said than done, but it's a distillation not a creation. To paraphrase Mark Twain: "Just cross out the wrong words."
