Brian T Marshall

Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Desperation. I'd never been satisfied with the Old Model, in which a select group of gatekeepers decided which material would be made available to the reading public. As the world grows increasingly complex, we need more perspectives, more diversity, more stories. The inclusive nature of indie publishing benefits both authors and readers alike.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finding an aspect of yourself you never knew was there. It could be a word that comes to mind, the perfect word for that moment. A character that says to hell with your plot points, and does something unexpected. Writing is discovery, an improv, an ad-lib, and if an author knows exactly what she or he wants to say, then what's the point in saying it?

Sex. Drugs. Rock n' Roll. What more could anyone ask for? Especially when you're just seventeen and San Francisco is calling.Choosing the Dark is a coming-of-age, set in the early 80's, when the dark nihilism of a fading punk scene gave way to the horror of AIDS. Funny, poignant, undeniably real, it's a journey you won't want to miss.
