A dedicated and passionate traveler, Elle has explored river caves in Jamaica and Costa Rica, hiked glaciers in New Zealand and Iceland, and done dogsledding in Greenland and Iceland. She's danced a fa'a Samoan haka and slept in a fale on the island of Savai'i in Samoa, hiked in the northern mountains of Thailand along the border with Myanmar in the Golden Triangle, and in Haiti, she witnessed a white goat ceremonially sacrificed to Erzuli Freda by a powerful Houngan. For a time she did Performance Driving in Southern California, and has years of study and experience dedicated to fencing, theatrical combat, archery, and horsemanship.

Elle currently lives in the central highlands of Costa Rica with her dog Pixie, and her hedgehog, Quiller.

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Los Angeles, where the real and the reel intersect in a way that makes the strange pretty much the norm. My father was a primary school teacher with an outrageous sense of humor. Because of his influence, I learned to read much earlier than most children my age, and pretty much read the entire library at school shelf by shelf. I always loved adventure and speculative fiction. I devoured the classics of Jack London (White Fang),Daniel Defoe (Robinson Crusoe), Jules Verne, The Tarzan books of E. R. Burroughs, and the works of H.G. Wells. The idea of Time Travel fascinated me at an early age, and my father saying things like "You were born into the wrong century" only made my interest even keener. At the age of twelve I became obsessed with keeping falcons in the back yard. Fortunately, for the hundreds of hapless French poodles in the San Fernando Valley, I was not allowed to do this. In the course of the following years, I took on the challenges of earlier times, how to fence, how to ride horses, learn archery, and I even took a "Grand Tour of Europe". As I write, all of this mixes, kind of like a zippy cocktail with a spritz of soda to fizz it up even more...
When did you first start writing?
I stared writing quite young. In the fourth grade I was writing about little boys in India (could that have been Kipling?) Telling stories about exotic people in exotic places and strange locations that existed only in my imagination. I loved it. I continued writing, mostly short stories (many that had my teachers wondering about my state of mental health, the stories were all Very Strange) I wrote long and rambling, but funny stories with friends (such as the notorious "COW"). And always, I took writing classes in school, all through University. And after.
