Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Libya during the war. That country was an Italian colony at the time, and was therefore part of the Hitler-Mussolini military axis. I was barely two months old when the war hit Libya, at which point all Italian women and children were shipped back to Italy. We were supposed to be 'safe' in Italy but that was not the case. In the ensuing couple of years I lost a sister to bombardment and my family lost all its possessions, while my father was still in Libya.
When did you first start writing?
As a young boy I liked poetry, especially the poetry of Dante Alighieri (The Divine Comedy) and Torquato Tasso (La Gerusalemme Liberata). Boccaccio (Decameron) and the more modern D'Annunzio and Pascoli were also among my favourites. As I grew up I started writing poems for my own amusement but never saved any of them. At the time it never occurred to me that I could be a writer. Instead, I chose to study engineering in England (it was easier than doing so in Italy) which also served me well to improve my school English. In those years I supplemented my student needs by writing articles for Italian newspapers and enjoyed reading many English classics, including Shakespeare, Jane Austen, the Brontes and many more. My knowledge of French also served to read Voltaire, Flaubert, Stendhal et al. It was at that point that I discovered my passion for writing, but I was also an engineer and needed to get going on a technical career. That's when I immigrated to Canada and was hired by a telecom company, then known as Northern Electric and later as Nortel. During the first couple of years of my employment I wrote for fun and produced a novel in Italian which was never published. I then wrote a similar novel in English and had it published by Carlton Press, NY in 1970.
In the meantime my career at Nortel took off and I had no time to write anything other than business reports. As the company became a major multinational in the early eighties, it took me around the world in senior management positions, with several years in Europe, Africa and then in Latin America. I started to write again in my retirement and have so far completed four novels, with more in the pipeline. The stories are all developed around my business experience around the world.
