Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Nova Scotia (when I say small I mean it: only 2500 people). My father worked for the military and is a big reader. My stepmother has a Master’s degree in English Literature, so she was very influential in shaping my creative side.
I think however that one of the reasons I started writing was because I sometimes found my small town life dull so I made up grand romances to get away from how mundane it all was.
What's the story behind your latest book?
After a disastrous year and a half at university, I moved back with my parents because I was unsure what to do next. I had loved writing for as long as I could remember and had gotten really involved in this online writers community called fan-fiction when I was in 12th grade. My readers there said my work was good. It was then that I started to think of making writer my occupation, But after seeing one of my mother’s writer friends struggle to make ends, meet however, I cast my dream aside for the safer route of university (dreams are important, but so is food!).
Life isn’t simple though, is it? The “safe route” turned out almost literally to be the end of me (long story) so after I had a day dream about my two leads I figured “What have I got to lose?” and the rest, as they say, is history.
