Tattered Innocence, by Ann Lee Miller I have been a fan of Ann Lee Miller’s books since I read the first one, Kicking Eternity, but her newest book, Tattered Innocence, is over the top! The two main characters, Rachel and Jake, stayed with me long after I finished reading the story. This book illustrates God’s loving forgiveness of sin even when people struggle with feelings of condemnation. Besides Rachel and Jake, the author weaves several other characters into the story with problems and issues of their own. An added highlight is Leaf, Avra, Cisco, and Jesse who were in Ann’s previous books. It was neat to revisit them! Guilt, remorse, selfishness, lust, affairs, unwanted pregnancy, as well as dysfunctional family and feelings of abandonment are woven into this fascinating story. Each of us can identify in some way with these struggles. Ann Miller uses her gift as a writer to give her readers a glimpse of the magnitude of God’s love through the lives of the characters. That’s what makes this story so powerful!

Through this compelling, heartfelt story, Ann Lee Miller has opened up the sensitive subject of homosexuality so today’s readers can grasp the struggles of many individuals and their families who are seeking to find answers and balance. She writes with compassion toward everyone while at the same time, never wavering from what God has given to man in His Word, the Bible. Can a person inherit a gene that determines homosexuality as his or her sexual orientation? Does a person have a choice whether or not to embrace the gay lifestyle? Is it possible to live in the homosexual world and still have a relationship with God? Throughout this story, Ash Jackson, a single, 24 year old music teacher, struggled with these questions and sought for answers for his own life. Ash’s father had divorced his mother to follow the gay lifestyle when Ash was a young teen and the impact that left on him brought a whole realm of emotions and questions regarding his own sexual orientation. His anger and embarrassment toward his father kept him from having a real relationship with his dad. Therefore, he didn’t know or understand his father’s reasons for his actions or his heart. After Ash’s parents divorced, he lived in Arizona with his dad during his middle school years. During that time he became best friends with Samma Templeton, the girl next door. When he moved back to Florida to finish high school and college, he could not forget Samma. Although they had lost all contact, Ash continued to follow her whereabouts when she became a famous singer and songwriter. As the story unfolds, Ash who could not seem to establish a long term loving relationship with any girlfriend, reconnected with Samma and soon knew that his heart had always belonged to her. Realizing this brought him to a crossroad – what is his own sexual orientation? Would he always be true to Samma? How does his relationship with God fit into his future? Mrs. Miller has written this story for all readers – those facing these struggles in their own lives or in the life of a family member or friend as well as those who want to understand the 21st century world. This story is filled with “heart” – family, soul searching questions, and romance. The characters are so real to life. They could be your own family or neighbors. This book will challenge you as a reader as it did me, but I believe it is a “must read.” I could not put it down until the last page.
