Mark Lutenbacher's "A River in a Bottle" is as enjoyable as floating in an inner tube down a winding river on a sunny afternoon. The adventures of three children in the post-Depression south evokes the writing of another southern treasure, Harper Lee. Although Lutenbacher doesn't set out to tackle controversial issues as Lee does, he does illustrate friendships know no color and, ultimately that loyalty and goodness are to be admired. The three children make the most of their time together, exploring, flirting with danger and satisfying their curiosity. The rich characterizations and colorful settings make this book a fun read and well worthwhile. When I finished this book, I knew I would miss the characters, but smiled broadly, thinking back on my own summer adventures as a child. A great book for middle-schoolers up to Adult.
