Chris Patrick Morgan lives in San Francisco. He keeps threatening to write more novels. Maybe one of these days he will follow through on that threat.

Smashwords Interview

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The act of making it possible for a reader to share your experience is really when the novel ends – and until you find that outlet, the novel feels unfinished, it gnaws on you and stops being your friend. I spent about a year shopping a novel around previously, and the process was so slow and cumbersome that it started to wear on my after a while. The novel never felt done. I wanted it to be done. Without that finality, self-doubt would creep in and I would find myself struggling, going back and wanting to rewrite entire passages which were clearly not worth rewriting, etc. Self-publishing allows me a freedom and a control over the process that isn't otherwise available. In essence, I get to declare when the process is done.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to create interesting and complex characters. Human beings don't necessary behave in consistent fashions. We are rife with contradictions and paradoxes. The fun in writing comes from trying to create characters who may do two different actions which seem diametrically opposed to each other – but if you've done it well, those actions seem understandable. I also love to dabble in the comical and the absurd. Not enough literature is funny. I don't see the point in writing grim, dismal, depressing literature. Real life is grim, dismal, and depressing enough. Why escape into a novel and be subjected to even more?
