Smashwords book reviews by Zoe Miller

  • The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell on June 13, 2015

The Last True Story pulled me immediately with its awkward, introvert teen angst. Its build-up is a bit on the gentler and more gradual side than most smut, dragging you on with that sort of infinitely-recognizable love from afar. But when it happens, it happens, and you’ll almost have to turn back a page to make sure you didn’t miss something in the jumping off. Way to keep me on my toes, Whitney! When that first scene is over, there’s a kind pit-in-your-stomach feeling: disastrous and delicious at the same time. That sort of half-drunk affair followed by post-orgasm reality–thoughts of “is this for real?” and “was I just convenient?”–speak deeply to my tastes. If I wasn’t already hooked, Di’s persistent smallness (”they still treat me like a preschooler!” she quips in the opening scene) and her precious trepidation made me demand to know what happened next!
  • Timepiece on June 13, 2015

The author cites Timepiece as a straightforward, directly porny so I expected a little less of it than I did the other work I read by her (The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell). I guess it’s good to have low expectations, it’s more fun when they’re readily shattered! Though Timepiece jumps straight to the sex, it’s by no means fast paced. Smut stories are so often the realm of brief, forced exposition: “my girlfriend was 5′2 with auburn hair and she often wore pleated skirts, and now that ~character development~ is out of the way, we can have sex!” I was struck by the slow, subtle descriptions of Felicia’s clothes–removed piece by piece–and her hair. Whitney gave me a lot of what I often find missing in these sorts of stories (even my own). These characters, Felisha and Missy, are all but rolling around on the floor from the first paragraph, yet Whitney interweaves descriptions of their personality, their fashion, their looks, and their past that, even as the locomotive steamed towards Sex Junction, I felt like I was learning every bit I ever wanted to know about these two women, and it made what followed all the more beautiful for it.
