As of February 16, 2024, all Smashwords users with uncomplicated accounts have been invited to migrate. If you've been invited, you'll see a banner at the top of your Smashwords Account page or Dashboard, and can from there fill out the survey. If your survey answers indicate you're still eligible, you will be migrated shortly after submitting the survey. Otherwise, you will need to wait until we are ready to migrate your account.
Users who have not yet been invited have known complications with their account that we do not support yet. Over the course of 2024, we plan to handle all these complications so everyone can migrate. If you would like to migrate ASAP, you can contact Smashwords support to request a manual review of your account to see if you can jump the queue. In some cases, we may just want to communicate with you about changes that will occur during the migration.
What happens when I click "start migration"?
Once the migration process has started, the author portions of your account will be locked and any information related to your books will be transferred to the Draft2Digital website interface. If you’ve purchased books at Smashwords you can still access them through your Smashwords Library.
When the migration process is complete, a notification will appear on your Smashwords account and we’ll also email you to confirm. You will be provided with a link to log into your new account at Draft2Digital. The process for an account transfer takes a few hours to a few days, and we will be shepherding accounts through at a pace where we can monitor things closely. You do not need to stay at your computer during this time.
What happens if I don't request migration?
Beginning June 1st, we will begin automating migrations without requiring the questionnaire to be completed. If you have multiple Smashwords accounts, you can expect to have multiple Draft2Digital accounts once the migration of your Smashwords accounts is complete. For authors and publishers who manage accounts for multiple authors, Draft2Digital's account sharing tool provides a convenient way of managing books for multiple accounts without needing to log out of one account and log into another. If your Draft2Digital account is associated with the same email address as your Smashwords account, then you'll see your Smashwords ebooks show up on the My Books dashboard at Draft2Digital once migrated. If your Draft2Digital account is associated with a different email address than your Smashwords account, then your accounts will not be merged. This means you'll have an additional account at Draft2Digital associated with your Smashwords account's email address.
Should I manually sign up at Draft2Digital to migrate faster?
No. We will create an account for you with the email on your Smashwords account, and send an email from Draft2Digital when your account is ready for you to set your password.
Smashwords users with a pre-existing Draft2Digital account with the same email are not yet eligible to migrate. When we are ready to migrate your Smashwords books into your pre-existing Draft2Digital account, we will notify you by email.
If you have a Draft2Digital account that has no books in it and you would like to request a migration ASAP, contact Draft2Digital to disable your unused account. Let us know that your D2D account is unused and we will temporarily disable it to start your migration.
Should I unpublish my live books at Smashwords to migrate faster?
No. We recommend you allow us to transfer your book information directly to Draft2Digital. After we migrate your account, you can continue to publish to the Smashwords store as well as your current sales channels through Draft2Digital. Migrating without unpublishing will provide an uninterrupted experience for both you and your readers.
If you choose to unpublish your books from Smashwords and recreate your books at Draft2Digital (migrating your books manually by yourself):
How do I log into my new account at Draft2Digital?
If you don’t already have a Draft2Digital account, we will create a new account for you using your current Smashwords email address. When the migration process for your account is finished, we will provide a link for you to activate your new account and set your password.
If you have an existing account with Books2Read (owned and operated by Draft2Digital) using the same email you use to log in to Smashwords, you will be able to log in with your existing credentials once your account migration is complete.
What if I already have an account at Draft2Digital with a different email address?
Your Smashwords account will migrate to a new account at Draft2Digital using the email on your Smashwords account. For now, log in to your preferred Draft2Digital account to manage the collection of books hosted on that account.
You can then set up Account Sharing through Draft2Digital to partially manage books in both accounts by granting permission to your preferred account. See the introduction to Account Sharing on the Draft2Digital blog to get started with Account Sharing.
What if I have multiple Smashwords accounts?
Each Smashwords account will be migrated to its own new account at Draft2Digital under the email you use to log on to Smashwords.
You may want set up Account Sharing at Draft2Digital to partially manage books in any of your accounts by granting permission to your preferred account's email address. See the introduction to Account Sharing on the Draft2Digital blog.
You will continue to have access to purchased books in your Smashwords library. Your current Smashwords account credentials, with your email address, can continue to be used to purchase and download books at the Smashwords store.
What happens to my book, series, contributor, and publisher URLs on Smashwords after migration?
These links will stay the same.
What happens to my books at all the sales channels?
Your current book listings will change very minimally and existing links to your books should continue to work as expected. If your books were in the middle of updating or in the middle of listing to a new store partner, that process will continue at Draft2Digital after the migration is complete. Going forward, Draft2Digital will manage and transmit future updates of your books.
Your balance will be transferred to Draft2Digital and you will need to set your preferred method of payment at Draft2Digital after the migration is complete. You can find your payment method under ACCOUNT > Payment Options – How D2D Pays You.
Can I make changes to my books after my account has been migrated?
Yes! Once the migration process is complete, any changes you want to make will need to be made through your new account at Draft2Digital. You will no longer be able to make changes to your books at Smashwords.
What happens to my Author Interview?
Your interview will not be shown on the new profile owned by Draft2Digital and the feature will be retired from the Smashwords website.
What happens to my RSS, Twitter, Facebook, and Wattpad links?
For now, these links will not be shown on your new profile managed by Draft2Digital.
What happens to my finalized sales reporting and daily reporting history at Smashwords?
Your daily reporting will be migrated into Draft2Digital’s daily reporting interface, though it won’t be shown immediately. Your historical finalized sales reporting will be available as downloads on Draft2Digital's site. Please allow at least a week for your sales data, including daily reporting, to be transferred and made available.
I am a Smashwords affiliate. What will happen with my account and earnings?
Over time your affiliate earnings will decrease as books migrate to Draft2Digital management and are opted out from the affiliate program.
Right now, authors who are also affiliates are not eligible to migrate.
What happens to books that are in multiple series?
Right now, users with books in multiple series are not eligible to migrate.
What happens to my series cover graphic?
Series covers are not supported at D2D and series cover images will be retired at the Smashwords store.
Will my book categorizations change?
Draft2Digital saves your book categorizations as BISAC codes instead of using the proprietary Smashwords categorization system. This may mean that your book categorizations could change slightly when your books are processed through the Draft2Digital system. The good news is that you are in control of the BISAC classifications and can change or update them at any time on the Draft2Digital website after migration.
Will my Erotica books stay up at retail partners after I migrate?
As long as your books follow the Smashwords Terms of Service, particularly section 9f which contains special guidelines for erotic literature, you should expect no change to your books' status at retailers. Draft2Digital follows exactly the same shipment policies to retailers for both mainstream erotica and erotica with taboo properties that Smashwords followed.
We acknowledge that BISAC has historically provided insufficient support for the diversity of erotica. Draft2Digital has worked to map and include Smashwords Erotica categories in their BISAC selector so that you will have the ability to continue to reach all Smashwords' specialized erotica categories, and your existing books will stay in those categories.
For retailers that don't yet support this specialized category extension, Draft2Digital will map to the closest generic BISAC option.
What happens to reader-set-price books?
Reader set price books will be set to the fixed price you configured, or to a default of $4.95 if not set.
After I migrate, what formats will my readers be able to purchase?
After you update your manuscript through the Draft2Digital interface, only the ePub format will be available to readers.
What happens if I only uploaded a mobi file to Smashwords?
If you would like to make changes to your book, you will need to upload your manuscript at Draft2Digital in any of the formats accepted at Draft2Digital (doc, docx, rtf, odt, epub). If no changes need to be made, the mobi will continue to work.
What happens to my Global Pricing settings?
Draft2Digital offers a feature similar to Smashwords' Global Pricing Manager, known as "Territorial Prices". The feature works differently than the Smashwords Global Pricing as Draft2Digital allows you to set an ebook price per currency, not a price per currency and country.
If you have configured Global Pricing, when your books are transferred to Draft2Digital, we will set your territorial pricing to the highest price that you specified for each currency. You can change this setting at any time after migration by visiting each book on Draft2Digital and going to "Step 4: Publishing" of the Ebook Publishing Process and clicking the "Manage Territorial Prices" button.
Because Draft2Digital does not offer per country and currency locks, any USD locks will not transfer.
Will I still be able to create Smashwords coupons after migrating?
Yes! Draft2Digital has created a coupon manager you can use to create coupons for your books at Smashwords. You can find it at Account > Multi-Book Actions > Smashwords Store Coupon Manager.
