About John Layne

John is a veteran of law enforcement whose career began with the Houston Texas Police Department in 1981. After bringing his badge to other agencies, he retired in 2012 but never left the profession. He is currently a Senior Detective for a state-wide law enforcement agency in North Texas.

His writing career began in the sports industry as a freelance writer and sports editor for national magazines and online publications.

He grew up watching western movies and reading stories of the Old West. His theatrical influences included actors John Wayne, James Stewart, Clint Eastwood, and Sam Elliott and directors John Ford, Henry Hathaway, and Howard Hawks. He drew literary inspiration from Louis L’Amour, Robert B. Parker, C. J. Box, and Lee Child. His passion for history and the classic western genre inspired him to write his first novel, Gunslingers (Newman Springs 2019), and its sequel, Red River Reunion (Labrador Publishing 2020), both classic westerns set in 1877 Texas.
John is an avid sports fan and horse enthusiast. He is a member of Western Writers of America, Western Fictioneers, The Authors Guild, American Paint Horse Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association.
