Kitty Thomas' writing style appears to be pretty straightforward and minimalistic when you first begin reading her stories, but she can really pack an emotional punch.

I both liked and disliked Christian, which I'm pretty sure is how I was supposed to feel. He is a monster and he makes no apologies for it. He is honest though, even when it isn't convenient to be, and I always respect that in a person.

BDSM elements:

Bondage and Discipline: 3 of 3
Dominance and Submission: 3 of 3.
Sadism and Masochism: He is certainly sadistic,
and she has some masochistic tendencies, but
not on the level of his sadism. 2 of 3
Extra Point: I've gone back and forth on this one.
It is an extreme book, and the D/s play is a
major factor throughout. However, it is not
consensual, and in my mind BDSM by definition
is consensual. But, if I don't give it then
that puts the intensity level at an 8, and it's
more intense than that. So, yes.

As for the writing elements, the plot is exceptional and has an unexpected and satisfying ending, something I had no idea was possible throughout most of the book. Pacing was fine, prose and dialogue were well written, character development was exceptionally well done, and world-building was detailed and interesting.

The Last Girl is a 10 of 10 for me, and the heat level a 4 of 5.

Book Rating: The Last Girl: 10 of 10
BDSM Intensity Level: 9 of 10
Heat Level: 4 of 5

What I loved most about this novel was the lack of squeamishness when it came to portraying the dark vampire who kidnaps Juliette. There is no compromising-- he's not a good guy hidden in a bad boy shell and he isn't going to be transformed by love.

From the moment I started reading, I completely fell into this world. It was a tough book to put down. As the end approached, I even found myself a little frightened about how the story would be resolved.

I enjoyed this book greatly, and I'm sure I'll be checking out other stories by this author.

This one cut deep. I'll read it again once I stop having nightmares!

I am a HUGE fan of Kitty Thomas, so any book of hers goes on my inner TBR list automatically. That said, the cover for The Last Girl hooked me. I couldn't get it out of my head. Which was torture for awhile, because I had to wait for the book!

For the book itself . . . let's just say I was not disappointed. This isn't a light read, this isn't a book you'll easily forget. I would say beware to those of you who prefer sweet romance, but I can't. If you love a great story, this should be your next read. I read it in one sitting and couldn't put it down. From the first page the tension mounts and you just know something wonderful, and horrible, will happen.

Juliette has been molded by an event that took place when she was very young, and what happened made her the perfect victim. But she's not pathetic or stupid, she's actually pretty normal. And that's part of what I loved about this book--her reactions to a very abnormal situation were believable.

Christian is . . . bad. Wonderfully, deliciously, evil. I applaud Ms. Thomas for keeping him that way and still making him the type of ant-hero I could lust after. The things he does to Juliette are twisted, brutal, and erotic at the same time.

You might not feel the same, but I recommend this book anyway. If you're not seduced, you'll be enthralled. I'm looking forward to more great reads from this author.
