Review by: John Francois on May 15, 2012 :
Doug Setter's novella, Selo, is about a tall skinny teen, Les, who learns how to defend himself against bullies. He gains these skills thanks to the help of a mysterious gangland character named Allan Marcus, a.k.a Matt Selo, who we meet in a hospital recovering from injuries received in his "work" in his gangland activities. A relationship develops as Matt become his tutor in standing up for himself, and Les runs various errands for him as his gofer.
I found the story to have much unnecessary dialogue, a story which would move better with good narrative. Some structural errors were found in the story. Matt could have been better developed and made a more sympathetic character, but we don't know what happens to him by the end of the story.
Still, a good read.

The story is a mix of coming of age, teen literature and suspense thriller. The main character, Les, seems to be a bully's target wherever he goes, the street, work, home and school. A mysterious criminal, Matt Selo, takes the teen under his wing and teaches Les about fist fighting, risk taking and making money. Can bad guys be good and vice versa? Les' new lifestyle brings attention from rival criminals, police and the usual band of bullies. Les is forced into becoming smarter, stronger and more cunning just to survive.
