I live at the elusive interface between two languages and I believe my call, as writer, is to explore that fertile terrain. Isaac Bashevis Singer once said that "a writer should never abandon his mother tongue and its treasure of idioms." What a perfect gem of a short story! The plot is thoroughly original, the narrative unfolding in a painterly fashion where the reader is able to see, taste, feel everything that is going on during the family gathering. I have read a lot of world literature over the pst forty years and can tell you that this remarkable piece of fiction can hold its own with the best that's out there. A perfect five stars, in my humble opinion.
