Miranda is a single mother who managed to get out of a dangerous and abusive marriage. Despite being a beautiful woman, she feels like she is used, scarred, fat , and useless because these have been words told to her many times by her ex. Since her divorce she hasn’t seen or dated any men. When she meets Dr. Zach Shannon, he’s different and feelings for him start to grow which scare her and she tries to push him away and run away from those feelings. Zach is very persistent and notices how special Miranda is and is not willing to let her get away that easily. He’s determined to be with her and get her to open up to him and start a relationship with him. Unfortunately, some past demons come back to the present and her whole future is suddenly threatened.
As the title, Love or Die, foreshadows this is not your typical light and fun romance. This book definitely has the romance part but there’s also a dark side to the story. After reading the title, as you can imagine, there does come a point where there’s a matter of life and death situation. Love or Die is a novella and therefore a very quick read. I was surprised with how much was fit in to such a short story. However, because the majority of this story is told over a period of like a week or two I feel like the relationship she starts with Zach is kind of rushed and becomes intense quickly. I felt like Zach came on very strong rather quickly and while I was reading there were points where I felt like some of the things he said and did were almost creepy and a tad stalkerish. He turns out to be a great guy but there were times when he would say something that would have caused warning bells to go off for me.
If you want a quick read that includes romance, mystery, action, and suspense then you would enjoy Love and Die because this short 85 page story has it all!

My Thoughts: It has been a little over a year since Miranda Row escaped from her mentally and emotionally abusive ex-husband Ethan. She is spending her days raising her young daughter Elizabeth whom Ethan never met or had a chance to ruin, keeping herself busy with work, and doing her best to become beautiful in her own eyes. While she wishes that she could give Elizabeth the love and security of a family that she had growing up, she doesn’t allow herself to grow close to any man in case he turns out to be like Ethan. Then she meets Dr. Zach Shannon, and she’s not sure she can resist him, but she does her best regardless. As the days go by, however, she’s not sure she’s truly escaped Ethan.
This story is a very quick read filled with romance, and lots of suspense in regards to Miranda’s past with Ethan, and some present elements of danger that have arisen. It takes place over the course of about two weeks with the last chapter’s events happening six months later. As such, things happen incredibly fast, especially Zach’s romantic pursuit of Miranda and Miranda allowing her defenses toward him to weaken. Unfortunately because of how short the story is – both in terms of time and the actual length – Zach’s interest in Miranda often comes across as creepy and way too strong. At their third meeting (less than 48 hours since their first meeting), he tells her “When I first saw you in the park, I knew I couldn’t resist until I made you mine.” Had he said this later in their relationship, perhaps weeks or even months after their first meeting, it could have come off as romantic, but instead it raised a red flag in my head that I couldn’t shake each time I read scenes that included him.
The mystery aspect of the story was very well done. At times you don’t know if it’s just Miranda’s mind playing tricks on her, or her past causing her to be overly anxious, until the story progresses and there is no denying that there really is an actual threat. Although the clues were dropped from the very beginning, I had no idea exactly how the events would come together and was pleasantly surprised (and worried for Miranda’s safety) when it was all revealed.
Final Words: I wish the story had been longer. The timing was pretty much perfect for the story’s mystery, but it left a lot to be desired when it came to Miranda and Zach’s relationship. What should have been seen as sweet and romantic instead came across as creepy and worrying the majority of the time I was reading it. Even so, Lana Mowdy did a great job showing the worries and thoughts running through Miranda’s mind thanks to everything she had been through with her ex-husband and how much her friends and family want her to be able to get back out there because, until she does, he continues to have a hold on her.

Love or Die Book 1 Live Love and Die Series (Lana Mowry)
Miranda Row is a recently divorced single mother/business owner. Dr. Zach Shannon likes Miranda and tries to woo her. She is skeptical of men due to her past marriage. As she tries to fight off feelings for Zach, she has some frightening experiences happening to her. Now she is not sure if she is paranoid, or if her past is coming back to haunt her.
Fast paced thriller/romance. I would read more from Lana Mowdy.
