Great start to a wonderful series. I love the characters, and really was interested in what happened to them. If I had to classify this set of novels, I would say it is primarily mystery, although action and fantasy also play a role.
The actions flow logically, given the knowledge of the characters at the time, and the mystery really keeps you guessing until the end of the story. The one caution I would make is that you definitely should read the books in order.
I read all five books in the series and enjoyed each one of the them. The shapeshifter premise is interesting and well developed but it is the character development of the supporting characters that is really quite good and adds a lot to the stories. I plan to re-read the series in the future as well as hold out hope for another case.
The only problem I found was the occasional typo or failure in editing which disturbs the flow of the story.
