This is the first volume to a truly wonderful fantasy/SF-series. I discovered the series only recently and was instantly hooked. Smart and competent and compassionate (well, except for the antagonists) characters, a truly interesting world with a plot-relevant history and interestingly different cultures and so many inventive, lovely details which never get in the way of a gripping plot of discovery. I really do not understand why this series is not better known. It should be up there with the Kingkiller Chronicles and The Goblin Emperor, in my opinion.

A well written story with interesting characters and a society that's quite intriguing on a world that's a bit of a mystery. I'm very much looking forward to each new book in this series.
