Time To Die by Robert AV Jacobs
This is book 3 of the Dexxman series. I know the central character, Larry Dexxman, very well, having lived through his encounters with a variety of villains in the previous volumes. The other "good" characters are all here, his very young wife, Penny, the 8 year old adopted son, Harry, Sally the talented Shih-tsu/Yorkshire terrier, the crew of the detective agency with two additions, and periodic specialised odd job friends. They support Larry through the unpredictable adventures fashioned by the the author. Time To Die is always fun, for all the pages are spent with old friends in peril.
Larry D. is 75 years young and clearly he is not going to be around for the next solar eclipse. There are moments when his heart signals time out though not time to die, and he ponders retirement, but then the present intrudes and he has no more time for the future. All of his friends gather about him throughout the story, protecting, admiring and applauding their man.
In Book 2, Dexxman dreamt events to come. In Time To Die that practise continues, and always with frightening consequences. The dreams predict events but reality displays a harsher surprise version. The bad guys are varied and multiply exponentially. Both sexes are represented - Jacobs is no foe to gender equality in villainy - but the females are by far the least merciful. The plot proceeds at a fast pace with ever less expected events. It requires, however, little more than a deft hand turning the pages as Dexxman advances through obstacles that would challenge a man half his age. Priapic as ever, he proceeds undaunted, as do the endless girls trying to seduce him. For a guy in his eighth decade he gives hope to all though some of us mutter, "You got to be kidding."
The book is very well edited, by the way. I encountered no grammatical or punctuation errors, a rarity in eBooks or, for that matter, anywhere. The copy editors and proof readers of the past have disappeared, and the result is less than exemplary. Time To Die is a literate exception.
Download Time To Die and be prepared for an enchanting few hours. 5 stars!"
