Well done, John! I really enjoyed this short little vignette you wrote. The whole zombie thing has been done so much, I was wondering what kind of twist you would put on it. Very good.
You asked that I be totally honest so, my only critique was not in the narrative, pacing or the story itself, but some of it seemed to lean on usual cliches a little too much. The story seems to take place at the onset of the zombie apocalypse, but Tom seems to already know an awful lot about how zombies work. For example, brain eating, bite infections, and how to stop them. Of course he mentions watching zombie movies... but that kinda makes my point. :) Tom himself seems a little cliched as well... the somewhat worn, collared reverend who needs to recover a little faith himself. I was reminded of Mel Gibson in Signs.
But where it was lacking in some originality in the set up, it made up for it with it's originality in the overall resolution. I loved the ending and how the main character had to relinquish control.
The short story was overall very enjoyable, easy to read, with compelling dialog, and was somewhat unpredictable (as far as zombie stories go). Great job. I look forward to reading more of your stuff!
