Interview with Aria Kozuki

Published 2019-12-14.
What is your writing process?
I tend to start with outlining my characters for story. Many times I will go into a lot of detail that almost never gets used. Still, it is fun to see these characters come to life. Once I have a solid cast of characters for whatever it is my story will be about I work out the setting and plot. Usually, I will go overboard with an outline for a book. Case in point, Hidden Lies is 125k words while the outline for it is 40k words. After that, it's just a matter of writing the thing and publishing it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Girlfriends by Milk Morinaga. If I believed in a goddess than she would be the one. Goddess of Yuri. Truly though the story had a large impact on my writing followed by the well written Katawa Shoujo. Those two works made my writing what it is today.
How do you approach cover design?
I just let Rei-chan deal with the covers. She knows what she is doing.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Girlfriends, obviously. The Love Live light novels were a fun read. Goblin Slayer was a well written piece of work. Chotto Kawaii Iron Maiden felt like something me and my little sister would write. Citrus was another great story that I enjoyed.
What do you read for pleasure?
Porn. Oh wait did you mean nonsexual? Science books generally. I love science and find things like quantum physics fascinating.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I just read on my computer.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
To be honest, I don't do all that marketing stuff. I just publish my light novels and then start working on the next one.
Describe your desk
It's a black wooden desk.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up near Harajuku. As far as influences go it would explain why I like to write about teenage girls with pigtails dressed in school uniforms.
How do you approach editing and book design?
Lucky for me I don't have to deal with that. Miru-chan handles all the editing. I kind of feel sorry for the girl. She has to edit all the author's books by herself. Rittsu-chan handles all the formatting of the e-Books. I have to say she is amazing. She is also a bit scary when you end up doing something wrong as far as typography goes but she isn't mean about, or tries not to be. It shows that she truly cares about how the e-Books look and takes care to make sure the books end up looking professional.
What is your favorite genre of music or your favorite band?
I like any kind of J-Pop music.
