Interview with B.E. Lore

Describe your desk
My desk is a leather recliner lounge where I sit with my feet out, and my laptop on a cushion on my lap. To my left, hung from our lounge room wall, is an original water colour from Bali of egrets sweeping their bills through a shallow pond for fish - one has succeeded. Straight ahead, through a picture window, I can see a green valley with palm and gum trees, and the occasional grazing sheep. To my right is a log fire, my wife’s sewing machine, and more gum trees through another window. I keep my reference material on a wooden coffee table to my left…and that is a mess.
What is your writing process?
I plan the story line and then see where my imagination takes me.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don’t have favorite authors, I have favorite stories, and the stories need to be epic. Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Dune, The Magician, The Wheel of Time. I want a series I can read and re-read.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my laptop, either in front of our fire, or lying in bed propped up on pillows. And if it’s raining outside…all the better.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Australia. I want my main character to be down to earth, and if need be prepared to tell the world to go and get stuffed.
When did you first start writing?
I was jotting down notes here and there for a novel for years, but never bringing them together into a coherent story. It wasn't until I became so frustrated by events at my workplace that I wanted to escape them through creating my own world. I love it writing. It isn't like work at all.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When the characters and scenes and stories in my head are read by others, and those others are chilled by acts of villainy, warm to less than perfect heroes, and are asked to question accepted norms.
How do you approach cover design?
I prefer book covers that accurately reflect a scene from the story; there are so many books that don't do that. Fortunately I have an artist in the family and she created my cover for $50. It’s not what you know…
Do you have a favorite literary quote?
“This tale grew in the telling.” It is from the foreword of my one volume edition of The Lord of the Rings. I can relate to it because that is how my story developed.
What are you working on next?
I am putting the finishing touches to Book 2 of the SB&G series - 'The Hand of Lucifer.'
Once that is complete I will dive into writing Book 3 – 'and Nero Fiddled.'
