Interview with Brooklyn Knight
Published 2021-02-19.
How do you approach cover design?
I work very closely with my book cover designer to choose models. She takes time to understand the story and the characters and together, we choose models who embody the theme and plot. Designing the book cover is one of my favorite parts of the creative process.
What's your favorite book and why?
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. It's a story which seamlessly integrates love, betrayal and redemption.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have go-to authors in my genre which I read between projects. I would like to venture into other genres, like mystery and fantasy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The Kindle app on my phone.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook is an amazing platform and much of my target audience is there. I also enjoy doing newsletter swaps.
Describe your desk
My lap is my desk.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am from Bermuda, which is a small island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean; however, I'm well-traveled (as most Bermudians are). As such, my imagination has been sparked by the time spent, not only in my island home, but in other countries such as Ecuador, Brazil and Canada.
When did you first start writing?
I literally remember writing my first 'book' at the age of 7 years old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's set in Ecuador, where I lived as a teenager - but other than that, there is no real 'story'. My characters tend to bombard me out of thin air and demand that their stories are told. That's exactly what happened with my latest series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I queried my debut novel, The Maid's Daughter, and received 3 requests for 'fulls'. The agents subsequently wrote back to say that, while they loved the story, they didn't like my hero (apparently, he was racist) and they suggested that I tweak him. My editor at the time told me NOT to touch him and to self-publish. I listened to her and haven't looked back.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm new to Smashwords, but I'm hoping to expand my readership through this exciting platform!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to create and get lost in new worlds.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love my fans! Without them, I wouldn't have 14 published novels. Their feedback, in the form of reviews, emails, messages on social media, are amazing and force me to keep writing!
What are you working on next?
This year (2021) I have 2 full-length novels and 2 novellas planned.
