Interview with Bruce Alpine

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in small town New Zealand. I guess thats the best term to describe it. Just north of our capital city, Wellington, on the Kapiti Coast. Paekakariki. A small sea-side town. I can't claim it influenced my writing in any way, but it was a great place to grow up.
When did you first start writing?
This was actually completely by accident, or more a result of circumstance. It all began over a debate about the state of the world and especially climate change, with a client of mine, from my day job. After some discussion, she suggested, I should write a book. Thats how my first publication "A History Of Life On Earth" was first conceived. In doing so, I decided to introduce the many different changes the Earth has experienced over its four and a half billion years and how the changes have effected the forms of life that have previously thrived, then due to the changes, died out. Paving the way for all the many modern life forms occupying the earth today. Including, at the end, pointing out a widely believed scenario that could severely effect life as we know it.
What was the reason behind your second book?
That book was actually the result of a suggestion from my editor. After working on "A History...", she suggested I should continue to write. It quickly became apparent, I should diversify into the evolution of man. "A History Of Life On Earth" introduces humans. But, mainly concentrates on the human legacy. I decided upon the evolutionary journey from our common ancestors, while pointing out the many misconceptions. Mainly the misconception that humans evolved from apes and the widely help misconception, there should be a missing link. These are all based on mis-understanding of evolution. "Distinctly Human: An Evolutionary Journey" explains our evolutionary journey, while explaining how and why many other human like species lived and died, due to the earths changing climates.

Both books are designed in a way, to compliment each other
Both you're previous books have been enjoying moderate global success, since release. How does that make you feel as a writer?
Wow, what can one say? Its certainly a kick to see the daily data and figures from all the retail outlets. To see a new review from a person who actually purchased a book, read it, then like it enough to take the time to write the review is always a special moment.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is watching a book evolve from its embryonic stage, right through to its finished package. An idea progress through to its physical presence.
What do you believe is the secret to your success?
I couldn't pinpoint any particular secret. The many emails I receive from readers mainly all hold the same theme. How easy the subject matter was to read and understand. When I set out with each book, I decided to present the evidence in a simplistic manner. Science based, non fiction is hard to write. But, it does not have to be that hard. I tried to present the information in layman's terms. I tried very hard to avoid the complex terminology and present it in an easy to understand format. I would rather avoid a single scientific term in favour of several words, than expect the reader to go rushing off to find a dictionary to try to find the definition for certain words.

I believe the strategy paid off. The reviews and emails tend to re-enforce that belief.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read non fiction. I guess I'm a realist in that regard. Scientific or Historical.
What is your reading and writing device of choice?
I just love my iPad and iPhone. They compliment my home based MacBook perfectly. When i'm reading or writing, its great to know the file is instantly updated across my other devices.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are great. I have an email link at the back on each of my titles. As a result, i receive a steady stream of emails from them. They mean the earth to me. Its always great to hear from them and read their comments.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The publishing and distribution with Smashwords has been fantastic. The distribution to retail channels was smooth and trouble free. The resources were extremely helpful. I certainly learned a lot.
