Interview with Dani J Caile

When did you first start writing?
In primary school, my first story was about a family who lived on a floating speck of dust. Later, I tried to get back to that innocent story in my teens but I was too serious, too full of conditioning from the environment around me. A few years ago I tried the NaNoWriMo Challenge and found my style.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had worked in a publishing company as a proofreader and learnt how the industry works. I knew being published would only be second to winning the lottery, so I went indie. There are some who thank me for it.
Who are your favorite authors?
Hemingway, Woolf, Shakespeare, Beckett, Chekhov, Bulgakov, Verne, Milligan, Donne...the list is endless.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given the indie author a platform to show and publish their work, This is invaluable, we would be the silent majority if such places didn't exist.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I guess my foundations were created in the middle of a wheat field, between the ages of 3 and 9. I think I'm trying to get back there, stripping away all I've experienced since then by writing.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a few things, firstly creating Macbeth for young ESL learners, and secondly a new book, completely aside from the others but in the same style, a parody of cliche fantasy.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I belong to a few facebook groups, I usually see them there, and sometimes I spot them on twitter.
What is your writing process?
I live my life and an idea pops into my head. I then find anything to write on. When I have the time / steal the time, I write it down. Everything comes together at once, the plot, the characters, the message, even the cover.
How do you approach cover design?
With an empty wallet. I use any program possible to create the image and usually I have to compromise with what tools I have to put it online.
What do you read for pleasure?
My top 3 would be William Shatner's 'Star Trek Memories', Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot', and Tom Stoppard's 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead'.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My dumb-ass phone.
