Interview with Danna LaRaine

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My first original work was before High School. A story about an alien named Kemo from the planet Pluto who has to travel to Earth to save his parents. His parents are Ambassadors. The story follows his adventures from planet to planet on his way to Earth.
What is your writing process?
I typically am a pantser. I take an idea and run with it. Sometimes I outline, an outline I am rarely capable of completing. I prefer flying by the seat of my pants to the end and then staring at it in dread at the horrible writing I've accomplished and must now attack with a vengeance to make worthy of a reader's mind.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first author I recall HAVING an impact was Piers Anthony and the original Xanth series. The puns were horrible, but the stories and characters were fun and lively. The Dragonlance books lit my passion of fantasy.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favorite books are from the authors Anne Bishop and Sarah J. Maas. Anne Bishop's worlds and characters are dark but full of life. She shows the "good" side of the darkness and how strength can be found in the most unique but seemingly plain individuals. Each of her different groups of stories -- The Black Jewels series, The Tir Alainn series, The Ephemera series, and The Others series are each powerful groups of stories the bring people together against a subtle evil that is so common these days it's scary. The Throne of Glass series is a dark fantasy about a young woman assassin. The characters are powerful and full of life. I enjoy her use of different character viewpoints, especially from the opposing forces.
What do you read for pleasure?
I prefer fantasy with some erotica or paranormal romance.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I prefer my iPad, however my iPhone is more readily available and is very convenient for finishing a book.
Describe your desk
You can't see it, but I know where everything is. I once read an article from HP that the creative mind cannot keep an organized and clean desk because it disrupts the creative process.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Southwest Missouri. I have experience with country living as well as small city living. Because the towns I have lived in have been relatively small, I have become accustomed to what others might call unusually kind and courteous people. They don't have a hidden agenda, they're genuinely nice on reflex.
When did you first start writing?
I have been writing since I could remember. One of my first books was writing down The Little Mermaid from memory with pictures.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I work full-time as a nurse, a job I enjoy thoroughly. It also provides the stability of a steady income and insurance. I do not have the luxury of attempting to publish "traditionally" as I cannot promise to meet set deadlines at this time.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I have all of these stories swimming around in my mind clawing their way to the surface trying to get out. To see those stories come to life and then share them with readers is the greatest joy.
What do your fans mean to you?
Knowing that I have created a story that others enjoy is the forward driving force in my writing career. Without fans, I am writing only for myself. And while I enjoy my writing, I enjoy more that others enjoy it too.
Who are your favorite authors?
Anne Bishop and Sarah J. Maas are at the top of my list. I also enjoy following certain series from Keri Arthur and Karen Chance.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work full-time as a nurse, part-time with computers, and I'm a full-time mom.
